Dental pulp is the soft area in the middle of a tooth that contains the blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerve of the tooth. Dr. Laurin Cardwell may recommend a root canal in Sylva, North Carolina, if the pulp becomes damaged or infected. During root canal treatment, our dentist will remove the infected pulp to save the tooth.
Before performing a root canal treatment, our dentist will take an X-ray. The tooth and the surrounding area will then be numbed with a local anesthetic. Dr. Laurin Cardwell will make an access hole in the tooth through which the pulp, bacteria, decayed nerve, and debris are removed with root canal files. After the interior of the tooth has been completely cleaned, the root canal is filled and sealed with a sealer paste and gutta percha. A filling is placed to fill the access hole. At this point, a crown is prepared and placed on the treated tooth. The dental crown will protect and support the tooth, as well as restore its function.
