What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, which is tooth shaped, is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. When cemented in place, the dental crown will cover and protect the entire visible part of the tooth.
When is a dental crown used?
Dental crowns can be used in a variety of situations. Dr. Laurin Cardwell may recommend a dental crown in Sylva, North Carolina, to:
– Protect a tooth a weak tooth from breaking or hold a cracked tooth together
– Restore a tooth that has been broken
– Protect and support a tooth with a large dental filling
– Hold a dental bridge in place
– Cover a badly stained tooth
– Cover a dental implant
How do I care for a tooth with a dental crown?
Your new dental crown does not require any special care. However, a tooth that is covered with a dental crown is not protected from decay or gum disease. Continue to practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day, taking extra care around the dental crown where the gum meets the tooth. Also, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once every day.
How long will my new dental crown last?
Depending on how well you care for your dental crown and your oral health, the crown can last between five and fifteen years.
